California Hits Pause on VC Diversity Reporting—Again

California has suspended enforcement of a law requiring venture capital firms to disclose demographic data about the startup founders they fund. The delay comes after investors lobbied the governor’s office to push back the deadline.

The reporting requirement was part of California’s push to increase transparency around who gets funded in tech. Under the original rules, VC firms operating in the state had to detail the race, gender, and other characteristics of founders receiving backing. The goal was to shine a light on funding disparities and hold the industry accountable.

But venture investors argued the reporting was burdensome and fought the mandate. Their appeals worked. California announced it would delay enforcement, giving firms more time before they face penalties for non-compliance.

This isn’t the first time the state has kicked the can down the road on this issue. The deadline has been extended multiple times since the law was first proposed, with each delay citing technical and implementation concerns from the investment community.
