FCC Chair Backtracks on Broadcast License Threat
FCC Chair Brendan Carr is walking back his threat to revoke broadcast licenses over war coverage. After facing backlash, Carr told reporters on March 27th that his comments weren’t actually about Iran war coverage at all.
\”My comments weren’t actually on the Iran war,\” Carr said at an event hosted by FGS and Semafor. \”I understand why people say that. I made a statement quoting a tweet.\”
On March 14th, Carr had quote-tweeted a screenshot from a Truth Social post. The move sparked immediate concern from free speech advocates and journalists who saw it as a potential threat to press freedom. But Carr’s clarification suggests the original statement was misinterpreted—or at least, that’s what he’s saying now.
The FCC chair didn’t elaborate on what his actual comments were about if not the Iran coverage. The vagueness leaves questions about what triggered the license threat in the first place and whether Carr’s explanation actually squares with what he originally posted.
